Empowering HBCU Athletes: Under Armour's Impact Beyond the Court

Under Armour (UA) continues its mission to unite, inspire, and change the world through the power of sports. In celebration of Black History Month, UA focuses on empowering underrepresented athletes, teammates, and communities, going beyond the court to uplift voices and make a positive impact.  This is what make’s Zwick Post’s first collaboration with UA so meaningful to our team, and why editors Jon Rouzier and Nick Alvarez rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion.

Uplifting Black Athletes

UA is committed to inspiring athletes to reach for more. Featured in UA's "Be Seen, Be Heard, Be Celebrated" campaign for Black History Month, athletes like Trace Young from Jackson State University (JSU) express their experiences. Trace emphasizes the significance of his HBCU, where he feels seen, heard, and celebrated, creating a unique sense of inclusion.  Jariyah Covington, another JSU athlete, echoes the sentiment, finding visibility and support within the women's basketball team.

Strengthening HBCU Relationships

In 2022, UA pledged to deepen its relationships with HBCU partners, starting with Morgan State University and extending initiatives like the Career Combine. The three-day virtual program, initially at Morgan State, now expands to all UA HBCU partners and all 12 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) schools in 2023. The program provides education, networking, and mentorship in fashion, design, retail, and business. Tchernavia Rocker, Chief People, and Administrative Officer, emphasizes the importance of investing in HBCU talent, aiming to broaden career possibilities beyond the court.

Empowering the Community

UA's commitment extends beyond sports to community empowerment. Partnering with District Running Collective for six years, UA supports initiatives promoting diversity and common goals. The annual District 19 Race advocates for social justice and voter awareness, with profits donated to local organizations like Anacostia Youth Sports Alliance. As part of UA's philanthropy efforts, change-makers like Matt Green, co-founder of District Running Collective, are spotlighted, highlighting their impact on the community.

Celebrating the Culture

UA transforms its engagement with Black athletes, community partners, and teammates, celebrating their stories through initiatives like the "Be Seen, Be Heard, Be Celebrated" collection. UA's Black teammates from the BEAT (Black Employees Achieving Together) group bring the collection to life, honoring those who paved the way for a better future. UA's commitment to celebrating and amplifying the voices of Black athletes, community partners, and teammates remains a critical building block for positive change.
